Avon Computer Club

The Avon Computer Club is an activity of the Avon Computer Co-operative. The nature of the computer club is an open monthly meeting giving like-minded practising I.T. professionals (often self-employed freelance contractors) an opportunity to network both professionally and socially. The meetings are open to all without charge. There are no formal membership requirements. The computer club will appeal only to professionals (developers, analysts, programmers, trainers, help-desk operators, network technicians, etc) and will not excite hobbyists.

The Avon Computer Club acts as an open house, and does not in itself advertise or seek to obtain work for its members. (Attendance at computer club meetings is entirely separate from formal Membership of the Avon Computer Co-operative).

Making yourself more marketable:

The ACC recognises the trend of recruitment agencies and large employers for "certified" professionals. There are now many examples where employers have streamlined their interviewing process by simply favouring (inexperienced but) certified candidates over other candidates who may have significantly more experience. This trend is forcing many older contractors to recognise the need for them to obtain relevant certification. Many I.T. professionals will already be aware of the certification programmes offered (for example) by Microsoft, Lotus, Novell, and Sun. The computer club intends to promote its monthly meeting as a focus for individuals to share in information exchange, mutual self-help and motivation leading to successful certification. (Formal training will not be provided). For everyday practitioners, the gaining of Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), MS Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), MS Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) or other recognised certification should not be unduly onerous.
